Searching quickly and effectively for a new leader

RUF (Reformed University Fellowship) is the official campus ministry of the Presbyterian Church in America. Ministries are present on nearly 200 college campuses across the US and the world.

In the fall of 2024, RUF formed a Search Committee to find its next leader — only the 6th leader since the campus ministry began in the early 1970s. The stakes were high.

But the search was also under major constraints from the beginning, with a mandate to find not just an interim leader, but a long-term leader who could be confirmed by RUF’s Permanent Committee only four months later.

This is where ALIGN was brought in to help. Together, we:

  • listened well across the organization, to get radically specific about what Good Fit would look like for this role in this season

  • created awareness of the role through highly tailored, human channels — even reaching out to two dozen candidates to extend a personal invitation

  • used ALIGN-created tools to enable thorough, but rapid vetting of applicants and rapid consensus on the search committee

  • created custom sets of interview questions for each candidate, in each round

  • presented an enthusiastically-received new leader within the requested timeframe

Our partnership with ALIGN was invaluable.

They excellently encouraged, equipped, and guided us through the process of identifying and recommending the next Coordinator for RUF on what felt like a very ambitious timeline.

I don’t think we could have done what we did in the time we had, without ALIGN.
— Josh Martin, Permanent Committee chair of RUF
